For all aspects of plastering:
1.       Prepare & Control the Suction:
·         If the wall is too dry, then the moisture will be sucked out of the plaster and it will become too firm to work properly.
·         This can relate to both the backing coat and the skim coat.

Tips on Backing coat plastering:
2.       Use sand based backing coat:
·         Sand & cement with plasticizer can give you many benefits.

3.       Apply Two Coats:
·         A very thin first coat just to make sure that it sticks properly into the wall.
·         It will not fall off later and let the second coat to be applied well.
·         When you do apply the 2nd coat, also make sure that the first thin coat is still wet and pliable.
·         A second coat can be applied with less pressure and enough to keep it flat.

4.  Keep it Flat:

·         Always ensure that you are aiming for flatness and not smoothness.
·         The backing coat needs to be flat as the skim coat.
·         It will carry out the job of smoothing much better.
·         It will be hard to get a smooth finish, if the backing coat is not flat.

Corners
·         Always check that all the corners are flat.
·         So, the whole wall will look good.
·         The Internal corners, the right & the left corners must be totally flat.
·         External corner ensures that all angle beads are straight.
·         It line up well with the surrounding walls or frames.

5.       Cut back:

·         It is really very simple to do and gives a quick check of everything.

6.       The Right Trowel:

·         The finish will be not fine, if the trowel is not very good.

7.       Make it thin:
·         Do not make the finish plaster too thick or else it will be very difficult to keep it flat.
·         It should be thin enough.
·         It will spread and gives a flat coat that is not more than 2mm thick.

8.       Trowel Angle:
·         Only good, if you have any bulges or thicker areas which require flattening.

9.       Push Hard:
·         Push hard to ensure that the plaster is flat with no bulges.

10.   Flatness, Holes then Trowel Marks:
·         Always consider this order and it must work out very properly.
·         Flatness to ensure that your trowel is sitting flat on the wall.
·         Before it firms up too much, get the holes filled by applying firm pressure.
·         Then when the plaster becomes quite firm, any trowel marks or ridges can be successfully smoothed out.

Successful plastering is very much reliant on the cleanliness of your tools and water. The slightest contamination will make the perfect finish almost impossible.
Dried flakes of old plaster can find their way into your mixture and onto your wall which leave an obvious scouring mark right across your hard work.
Try to get into the habit of cleaning all the tools. It is the easiest and simplest ways to get a great plastering result.
A properly finished plaster surface will have the touch and feel of an egg shell and is not perfectly smooth like glass.
You are almost certain to encounter problems without any adequate preparation of your surface.
If you want to attain a good smooth finish which lasts, then remove loose dust, dirt and crumbly material from the surface which is to be plastered.
Before applying any primer, wash the surface properly and brush down accordingly. In general, this will be a mixture of PVA glue and water.
The first coat of primer is designed to give a foundation for your plaster and a great fence between the plaster. Without it your plaster may dry out.
Cracks may develop as the wall adsorbs moisture from the new plaster. Prior to plastering, a second coat of the mixture should be applied directly.
It becomes much easier to apply a smooth plaster coat which sticks and stays well.
1.       Plaster will not stick to any surface.
2.       So, it ensures that your surface is ready to be plastered.
3.       Make sure it is clean.
4.       Kindly remove bits of existing plaster, dust or wallpaper.
5.       Verify the suction of your wall.
6.       High suction porous backgrounds can suck the moisture from the plaster.
7.       This means it dries out quickly.
8.       Before you start, you may need to wet the wall.
9.       While wetting your walls, use a fine mist spray gun.
10.   You know you have controlled the suction once the water starts running down the wall.
11.   A low suction background like painted surfaces is required to be properly prepared.
