Plastering Tips & Techniques for the DIY Plasterer!

If you’re a beginner to plastering, then before starting any plastering job you need to consider these tips and techniques.
Not only this, also you need to keep in mind that during plastering if you use best quality Gypsum plaster, then it helps keep your wall rigid & fixed.

1.     Choose Your Area:

If you’re a beginner to plastering, then you might prefer to start in a spare bedroom. This will greatly reduce the stress on you.

Keep in mind that you can plaster the walls as many times as you like. So, you can always review a not so perfect job later as you get better.
Plastering is largely a matter of confidence.
Before hitting your own walls for the first time you might prefer to start in a low-pressure environment first.

2.     Have A Good Supply of Water:

You need to keep your equipment very clean and most importantly clean as you start.
Also, there is no doubt, mixed plaster sets very hard and sets quite fast.
Dried plaster sticks very hard and you have to clean carefully and repeatedly as you go.
There are reasons for this:

·        Plastering equipment would usually need replacing if plaster is not cleaned off with water before it dries. It’s expensive and is wasteful.

·        Contaminated plaster cannot be used. It needs to be disposed of quickly.
If you want a nice job, then you’ll need a good supply of clean fresh water. This can be a problem on some building sites where there’s lack of running water.
Fill plenty of buckets of water in advance for mixing and cleaning. Remember that plaster can block drains.
So, you need to avoid draining too much plaster slurry down the drains.
You can dispose of dirty water with plaster down a main outdoor drain not a sink drain.
Above all, always keep your buckets and trowel clean and make sure that you only use perfectly clean water for mixing the plaster.
·        Never use plaster that is going off. Plaster is cheap, so throw it away and start again.
·        Never use plaster which is contaminated with anything.

3.     Allow yourself proper time to get the job done:
Don’t spare much time in plastering. You really need at least a half day i.e three to four hours, that’s it.
You can spend at least 2 to 3 hours for the plastering work and an hour for setting up and cleaning.
So, you can get home from work at night & make some progress on your walls right after your dinner.
You can still allow yourself full time to get a whole room done as a total beginner.

4.     Make sure that you’ve planned the job:
Trying to plaster a whole room at once as a beginner won’t be possible.
You can start with just one surface at a time & feel free to leave the larger walls until last.
A plasterer knows in advance exactly what they want to achieve that day & therefore plan accordingly.
Always make sure that before you start, you check the equipment checklist.

What to keep in mind:
When you plaster near any electrical socket, switch, light fitting or appliance, always remember to turn off your main power.
Before starting any plastering work, you can always seek the advice of a qualified electrician & building surveyor.
